UK Visit Visa from Bangladesh

UK Visit Visa from Bangladesh: The Genuine Visitor Test

Verified as of August 2026. UK Immigration Rules and application processes change without notice. Confirm every requirement on gov.uk before you apply.

Short answer. A Bangladeshi passport holder needs a Standard Visitor visa to visit the UK for tourism, family visits or business activities. You apply online on gov.uk, pay the fee online, then attend a VFS Global application center in Dhaka or Sylhet in person for biometrics and document submission. You can usually stay up to 6 months, and the earliest you can apply is 3 months before you travel, as published by gov.uk. The decision is not made against a checklist. It is made against a published test in Appendix V of the Immigration Rules, and that is what the rest of this article is about.

Search this topic and you will get seven results in a row from immigration firms, consultancies and lead-generation blogs, each with a document list and a price. Not one gov.uk page ranks on the Bangladesh-specific query. So start with the thing the rules actually say.

The test you are being assessed against

The UK’s Immigration Rules, Appendix V (Visitor), set out the genuine visitor requirement at V 4.2. The applicant must satisfy the decision maker that they are a genuine visitor, which means the applicant:

  • will leave the UK at the end of their visit
  • will not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits, or make the UK their main home
  • genuinely seeks entry for a purpose that is permitted under the Visitor route
  • will not undertake any prohibited activities
  • has sufficient funds to cover all reasonable costs of the visit without working or accessing public funds

Read that list again, because it changes what your application is for. Nothing in it is a document. Every item is a conclusion the decision maker has to reach about you. Your documents exist only to make those conclusions reasonable.

That is why “which documents do I need for a UK visa from Bangladesh” is the wrong first question, and why two applicants can submit identical folders and get different answers. One folder supports the conclusions in V 4.2. The other does not.

What “you will leave at the end of your visit” means in practice

gov.uk states plainly what a Standard Visitor must prove: that you will leave the UK at the end of your visit, that you are able to support yourself and your dependants during the trip, and that you are able to pay for your return or onward journey. It also states that you must not make the UK your main residence through repeated visits.

There is no magic document that proves any of this. What exists is the ordinary evidence of a life that continues in Bangladesh: employment or a business that carries on, study that resumes, family responsibilities, property or tenancy, and financial history that matches the trip you say you are taking.

Two honest cautions, and they are the reason this section exists.

We are not going to coach you. Anything written as “say this to convince them” is either useless or dishonest, and the dishonest version is far more dangerous than a refusal. Never submit a document that is not genuinely yours. A bank statement you did not earn, an employment letter for a job you do not hold, or an invitation from someone you have not met is not a shortcut. It is a deception finding that follows your name and fingerprints through the UK system for years.

Consistency is doing more work than volume. An application where the stated purpose, the dates, the funds and the supporting documents describe the same trip is a coherent file. Adding more paper to an incoherent one does not fix it.

What you can and cannot do as a Standard Visitor

From gov.uk’s own Standard Visitor page.

Permitted Not permitted
Tourism and visiting family or friends Paid or unpaid work for a UK company, or work as a self-employed person, outside the permitted engagement rules
Business activities such as meetings and conferences Claiming public funds
Study courses of up to 6 months, and recreational courses of up to 30 days Living in the UK for long periods through frequent or successive visits
Volunteering for up to 30 days
Permitted paid engagements, and medical treatment visits

The line that catches Bangladeshi applicants most often is the last one on the right. Visiting a family member in the UK repeatedly is entirely legitimate. Structuring your year so that you are in the UK for most of it, on visit visas, is the thing V 4.2 explicitly disallows, and it is assessed on your travel history, not on your intentions.

The process from Bangladesh, step by step

  1. Apply online on gov.uk. The application, the questions and the fee all live there. The earliest you can apply is three months before you travel.
  2. Pay the fee online. A non-refundable application fee applies, published on gov.uk in the currency the service charges. We do not publish figures, and note that VFS Global Dhaka no longer accepts cash, so plan on a card.
  3. Book your appointment at a VFS Global UK visa application center. Bangladesh has locations in Dhaka (Gulshan 2) and Sylhet.
  4. Attend in person for biometrics, meaning fingerprints and a photograph, and to submit your documents.
  5. Wait for the decision. We are not going to tell you how long it takes. Published service standards exist, they change, and they are not a promise about your file. Do not buy non-refundable tickets before you have a decision.

If you are not sure which missions and application centers operate in Dhaka at all, which embassies and visa centers are actually in Dhaka maps them.

Two things the Bangladeshi guides get wrong

The TB test is not a standard visitor requirement. gov.uk states that you need a tuberculosis test if you are coming to the UK for 6 months or more and you have lived in a listed country for six months or more, plus a narrow set of under-six-month cases: a Returning Resident visa, or a family visa as a fiancé. A normal Standard Visitor trip is not a stay of six months or more. Several pages ranking for this search list a TB certificate flatly as a visitor requirement, which sends readers to a clinic they may not need. Check gov.uk’s TB test page against your own visa type and intended stay before you book any test.

The UK’s ETA is not for you. The UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is for non-visa nationals, meaning people who do not need a visa to visit the UK in the first place. A Bangladeshi passport holder needs a visa. So an ETA is not an alternative, not a faster route, and not something you can apply for instead. If any site or agent offers to get you a UK ETA on a Bangladeshi passport, they are selling you the wrong product. Home Office guidance also notes that the list of nationalities able to apply can change, so the place to check is gov.uk, not a reseller.

If you are refused

This is the part that changes how carefully you approach the first application, and it is missing from almost every Bangladesh-facing page on this topic.

A Standard Visitor refusal generally carries no right of appeal and no administrative review. UK immigration practitioners consistently describe the position this way: visitor refusals cannot be challenged by administrative review, appeal rights exist only on narrow human rights or discrimination grounds, and the practical routes are a fresh application or, rarely, judicial review, which examines the lawfulness of the decision rather than re-weighing your evidence.

Three consequences follow.

  1. There is no second look at the same file. Reapplying is a new application, with a new fee, judged fresh.
  2. The refusal notice is the most valuable document you will receive. It names the ground you were refused under. Read it before doing anything else.
  3. Resubmitting the same application rarely changes the outcome. If the ground was funds, or purpose, or credibility of the stated trip, that is what has to be different.

Your own refusal notice states what rights, if any, attach to that specific decision. Read it rather than relying on a general statement, including this one. For the pattern across destinations, why visa applications from Bangladesh get refused covers the published refusal grounds used by the UK, the US and the Schengen states side by side.

Where the UK sits among your options

The UK and Schengen are the two applications Bangladeshi travelers most often attempt in the same year, and they work differently. The Schengen application from Bangladesh turns first on jurisdiction, meaning which member state is even allowed to examine your file. The UK has no such question: one country, one route, one set of rules. The US B1/B2 interview in Dhaka is different again, because it turns on a statutory presumption applied in a conversation rather than on a document set.

And if you are early in this, the honest ordering matters. A record of visits made and returns completed is evidence of exactly what V 4.2 asks about. The visa-free and visa-on-arrival destinations for a Bangladeshi passport are where most people build that record.

FAQ

What visa do Bangladeshis need to visit the UK?

A Standard Visitor visa, for tourism, visiting family or friends, business activities, short courses and certain other permitted purposes. You apply online on gov.uk and attend a VFS Global application center in Dhaka or Sylhet for biometrics. gov.uk states you can usually stay up to 6 months.

How early can I apply for a UK visit visa from Bangladesh?

gov.uk states the earliest you can apply is 3 months before you travel. Because decisions are not guaranteed within any timeframe, apply as early inside that window as your plans allow, and avoid buying non-refundable tickets before a decision.

Do I need a TB test for a UK visit visa from Bangladesh?

Not for a normal visit. gov.uk states the TB test applies where you are coming to the UK for 6 months or more and have lived in a listed country for six months or more, plus a small number of under-six-month cases including a Returning Resident visa and a family visa as a fiancé. Check gov.uk’s TB test page against your own visa type and intended stay before booking a test.

Can a Bangladeshi passport holder use the UK ETA instead of a visa?

No. The UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation is for non-visa nationals, meaning travelers who do not need a visa to visit the UK. Bangladeshi nationals need a visa, so the ETA is not an alternative route. Anyone offering to obtain a UK ETA on a Bangladeshi passport is offering the wrong document.

Can I appeal a UK visit visa refusal from Bangladesh?

Generally no. UK immigration practitioners describe Standard Visitor refusals as carrying no administrative review and no general right of appeal, with appeal available only on narrow human rights or discrimination grounds. The usual routes are a fresh application or, rarely, judicial review, which tests the lawfulness of the decision rather than re-examining your evidence. Read your own refusal notice, which states what rights attach to that decision.
