The NVR application documents every Bangladesh mission we checked asks for come down to six things: the printed online form from visa.gov.bd, your foreign passport, a passport-size photo, proof of Bangladeshi origin (yours, or your parent's or spouse's Bangladeshi passport, NID or birth certificate), proof of the family link if you apply as a spouse or child, and proof of residence if you are not a citizen of the country where you apply. Each mission then adds its own extras, fee and payment rules.
This guide compares what three Bangladesh missions published when we read their pages on 27 September 2026: the Consulate General in New York, the High Commission in London and the Consulate General in Dubai. It is general information, not legal or immigration advice. The mission that serves your address has the final word on what it accepts.
Why every consulate's list looks different
Each Bangladesh mission writes its own NVR page for its own applicants. New York writes for US citizens and US residents, so it talks about US birth certificates and US residence proof. London writes for British and EU nationals living in the UK. Dubai writes for foreign nationals living in the UAE, so it asks for Emirates ID. The wording differs, the order differs, and a few documents appear on one list and not another.
Underneath, though, they are all checking the same three facts:
- Who you are now: your foreign passport and form.
- Your link to Bangladesh: a Bangladeshi document, yours or a close family member's.
- That you belong to this mission: residence proof if you are not a citizen of the host country.
Build your file around those three facts and the mission-specific extras become easy to add.
NVR application documents: the common core
1. The online form, printed
All three missions direct applicants to the Bangladesh government's visa portal, visa.gov.bd. New York asks for a printed copy of the completed online NVR form with its bar code, and also offers a downloadable form. London asks for the completed online form and gives tips on its No Visa Required page: skip the payment and photo upload sections, choose "Others" in the organization field, avoid special characters in the address, and do not use a Mac to fill it in.
2. Your foreign passport
This is the passport that receives the NVR, so the original goes in. New York asks for the original valid passport plus a copy of the photo page. Dubai lists the original and a copy.
3. A passport-size photo
New York asks for one recent passport-size photo. London asks for a photo attached to the printed form, and its guidance for children says glued, not stapled.
4. Proof of Bangladeshi origin
This is the document that decides eligibility, and it is where most files fall short. New York accepts a copy of any of these:
- a Bangladesh machine readable passport
- an old handwritten Bangladesh passport, pages 1 to 5
- a Bangladesh birth registration certificate
- a dual nationality certificate
- a national ID card
London asks for a Bangladeshi passport, NID or Bangladeshi birth certificate, and requires the original at an in-person submission. If your only Bangladeshi passport is an old handwritten one, our comparison of MRP vs e-passport explains how the passport formats changed over the years.
5. Proof of the family link (spouses and children)
If your eligibility comes through a spouse or parent, you add their Bangladeshi document plus the document that connects you:
- Children: a birth certificate naming the parents, plus a parent's Bangladeshi passport, NID or birth certificate. New York accepts a US birth certificate with a parent's Bangladesh passport for US-born applicants.
- Spouses: a marriage certificate plus the Bangladeshi spouse's document.
6. Proof of residence, if you are not a local citizen
New York asks non-US citizens for proof of residence in the USA, such as a residence permit, work permit or valid visa. Dubai asks for proof of UAE residence: Emirates ID or visa. London's eligibility wording refers to a valid UK residence permit.
Where the three missions differ
| Item | New York | London | Dubai |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online form from visa.gov.bd | Yes, printed with bar code | Yes, printed | Yes |
| Foreign passport | Original plus photo page copy | Original | Original plus copy |
| Photo | One recent passport photo | Attached to form | Listed in the page's guidance |
| Residence proof | For non-US citizens | Valid UK residence permit in eligibility wording | Emirates ID or UAE visa |
| Spouse extras | Marriage certificate, Bangladeshi spouse's passport | Registered marriage certificate, declaration of marriage, both present for interview | Marriage certificate (nikahnama), affidavit of relationship, police verification |
| Previous NVR | Old passport's photo page and NVR page accepted | Parent's NVR does not qualify children | Spouse's or parent's NVR does not qualify you |
| Other extras | Court order for name changes | None beyond the above | Naturalization or foreign citizenship certificate, affidavit from parent or spouse |
| Fee as listed | USD 88, from 1 June 2025 | GBP 70 | AED 350, cash only |
Fees are those each mission listed on 27 September 2026. Missions can change them without notice, so check the page on the day.
Dubai's longer list
The Consulate General in Dubai's NVR page, read on 27 September 2026, asks for more supporting papers than the other two. Beyond the core, it lists an Emirates ID copy, a certificate of naturalization or other foreign citizenship record, and an affidavit from a parent or spouse about the applicant. For spouse and child applications it adds the nikahnama, an affidavit of relationship and police verification for spouses and for children above 15. Applications go through its appointed service center, the fee is listed as AED 350 payable only in cash, and the consulate says it needs at least seven working days for a standard application.
London's spouse interview
London is the strictest of the three on spouse applications in one respect: it states that the applicant and the Bangladeshi spouse must both be present at the High Commission on the day of the appointment for an interview. Plan around both people's availability.
New York's shortcut for renewals
New York is the most flexible on repeat applications. If you had an NVR in your previous US passport, it accepts a copy of that passport's photo page and NVR seal page, and says a Bangladesh passport is not required in that case. The other two missions stress the reverse: someone else's old NVR does not make you eligible.
The documents that cause the most trouble
Name changes. If the name in your foreign passport differs from your Bangladeshi document, New York asks for a copy of the court order, or the marriage certificate where a husband's surname was added. Our guide to name and date of birth mismatches on a Bangladeshi passport explains how these gaps usually arise and why they get questioned.
Only an old NVR in the family. London and Dubai do not accept a parent's or spouse's NVR as the qualifying link. Find the underlying Bangladeshi passport, NID or birth certificate.
Originals. New York asks applicants not to send any original document other than the passport being stamped. London wants to see the original Bangladeshi document at an in-person appointment. Follow your own mission's instruction, because the two approaches are opposite.
Birth certificates in another language. Dubai's guidance for children asks for a birth certificate in English with the parents' names clearly shown. If yours is not in English, ask the mission what translation it accepts.
A simple way to organize the file
Put the file together in the order the officer will check it:
- Printed online form, with photo attached as instructed
- Foreign passport original, plus copies
- Your proof of Bangladeshi origin, or your parent's or spouse's
- Birth or marriage certificate showing the family link, if relevant
- Residence proof, if you are not a citizen of the host country
- Name-change documents, if relevant
- Mission-specific extras such as affidavits
- Fee in the exact form the mission accepts
Keep a scanned set as well. Our guide to your travel documents folder covers what to carry, print and back up for the trip itself, including the proof of origin you may want on hand at Dhaka immigration.
Document lists and fees change, and a mission can ask for an interview or extra papers. Before you submit, confirm the current list on the website of the Bangladesh mission that serves your address.
FAQ
What NVR application documents does every mission ask for?
Across New York, London and Dubai, the common core is the printed visa.gov.bd form, your foreign passport, a photo, proof of Bangladeshi origin, proof of the family link for spouses and children, and residence proof if you are not a citizen of the host country.
Can I use my parent's Bangladeshi birth certificate as proof of origin?
For a child's application, missions ask for a parent's Bangladeshi passport, NID or birth certificate together with the child's birth certificate naming that parent. Check your mission's exact wording.
Do I send original documents?
It depends on the mission. New York asks for no originals except the passport being stamped. London wants the original Bangladeshi document at an in-person appointment.
I had an NVR in my old passport. What do I need now?
New York accepts a copy of the previous passport's photo page and NVR page instead of a Bangladesh passport. Other missions may still ask for Bangladeshi documents, so check yours.
Does a spouse need to attend?
At London, the applicant and the Bangladeshi spouse must both attend the appointment for an interview. Dubai lists police verification for spouses. Ask your mission what it requires.
