Why we will not tell you a minimum bank balance
This is the information gain, and it is the reason most of this page is deliberately unhelpful in one specific way.
Search this topic and you will be given numbers with total confidence. One page states a minimum balance of BDT 700,000 per applicant. Another gives USD 3,000 to 5,000 for a two-week trip. Others give six months of statements, or three months, depending on the page. None of them cites a Japanese government source, because as far as we can find, there is not one to cite.
Japan’s short-stay requirement is expressed as documents certifying ability to bear the expenses of the stay. It is a sufficiency test judged on your whole file, not a threshold you clear. That distinction is not a technicality:
- A balance that appeared in your account three weeks before you applied is weaker evidence than a smaller balance that has been there for a year, because the file is read for plausibility, not just for a number.
- Your stated itinerary sets the bar. Nine days in business hotels in Tokyo and Kyoto implies a different cost than nine days with relatives, and your financial evidence is read against your own plan.
- If a guarantor is covering you, the balance being examined may not be yours at all.
So the honest answer to “how much do I need in the bank” is: enough to cover the trip you have described, evidenced in a way that looks like your normal financial life. Anyone quoting you a precise threshold as an official requirement is either repeating another blog or describing what one agency has observed. Neither is a rule you can rely on, and inflating an account shortly before applying is a well-known pattern that helps nobody.

What “no visa fee” does not mean
It does not mean the application is free of cost. It means the government charge is zero and the service charge is not. Budget the BDT 2,090, plus whatever optional services you genuinely need, plus the real cost of assembling documents: bank certificates, tax paperwork and certified translations all cost time and money in Dhaka.
It also does not mean the application is easy. Japan’s refusal decisions are not published with reasons for individual applicants, and neither the center nor an agency can promise you an outcome. Anyone who tells you a Japan visa is guaranteed with a certain balance in your account is describing something the Embassy has never published.
Practical sequence
- Fix your travel dates and build a real schedule of stay.
- Download the current Short-Term Checklist from the Japan Visa Application Center site.
- Assemble the financial block early. Bank solvency certificates and tax documents are the slowest items in Bangladesh, not the visa itself.
- Book your appointment through the center’s own site.
- Pay the BDT 2,090 service charge, decline the optional extras you do not need.
- Allow more than five working days in your planning. Five is the usual figure, not a commitment.
- Do not buy non-refundable flights before the visa is issued. A flight reservation for the application is not the same as a purchased ticket.
