Personal effects versus imports
Customs is not primarily asking how much your things are worth. It is asking what they are.
Personal effects are the things you traveled with, use, and are bringing home with you. The phone in your pocket. The laptop you worked on. Your clothes. These are the ordinary contents of a traveler’s bag and they are treated as such.
Imports are goods being brought into the country. A new device in its box. Several of the same thing. Something clearly bought to give away or to sell. These are goods entering Bangladesh and the allowance and duty rules apply to them.
Almost every difficult conversation at a customs desk is about which side of that line an item falls on, and the factors that decide it are not secret:
Is it in its retail packaging? A boxed, sealed, unregistered device reads as an import.
Is it obviously in use? A phone with your photographs on it, a laptop with your work, a watch with wear on the strap.
How many are there? This is the single largest factor. One of something reads as personal. Five of the same thing reads as a quantity, whoever they are for.
Do you have receipts? Proof of when and where something was bought is the cheapest thing to carry and the most useful.
Is it for you? Carrying goods for another person is its own category and it is one of the most common ways ordinary travelers get into trouble.
Why this page publishes no figures
We are not going to tell you how many phones, how much gold, or what value threshold applies.

And a second reason that stands regardless of our tooling: these figures change. Allowances and duty treatment move with the budget and by notification. A number published today can be wrong within months while continuing to look authoritative on a page like this, and a wrong figure here costs a reader money at a desk where there is no appeal in the moment.
A page that gives you the distinction and sends you to the authority is more useful than one that gives you a number from last year.
The three categories people actually ask about
Electronics
The distinction above does most of the work. A device you are traveling with and using is not in the same position as a boxed new one.
Where it gets difficult is a new device bought abroad for yourself. It is genuinely yours and it is genuinely new, and that is exactly the ambiguous case. Receipts help. Unboxing it and setting it up before you fly makes it look like what it is.
Several of the same device is the case with the least ambiguity, and it reads as a quantity regardless of who they are for.
Gold and jewelry
This is the category with the most specific rules and the most serious consequences, and it is where the difference between declaring and not declaring is largest.
Worn jewelry that is obviously yours is a different case from gold being carried. We publish no quantity and no value, and this is the category where reading the authority’s current rules before you fly matters most, because the penalties are not administrative.
And carrying gold for another person is the specific scenario that causes the most serious outcomes for travelers who did not think they were doing anything wrong.
Gifts
A gift is still an import and it is still your declaration. The person it is for does not change what it is when it crosses the border with you.
The green channel is a decision, not a default
Walking through the green channel is a positive statement that you have nothing to declare.
It is not the “no queue” option and it is not what you do when you are unsure. If you are unsure, the red channel is the correct choice, and the conversation there costs you time rather than a penalty.
People walk through green because it is quicker and because declaring feels like inviting scrutiny. The scrutiny you invite by declaring is a conversation. The scrutiny that follows an undeclared item found in a bag is a different category of event.
What to do before you fly home
Read the customs authority’s current passenger guidance. Not a summary of it, including this page.
Keep receipts for anything new and valuable, accessible rather than in the hold.
Set up and use anything new before you travel, so it reads as yours.
Do not carry anything for anyone else. This is the flat rule with the fewest exceptions in travel, and it applies to a package from a friend as much as to anything else.
If you are unsure about an item, ask before you buy it, when you still have the option of not buying it.
And if this is your first trip, the whole outbound and return sequence is in your first international trip from Bangladesh, and customs on the way home is the last step of it rather than the first.
