Short answer. A Bangladeshi passport holder needs a Schengen short-stay visa. You do not get to pick the embassy. Under the EU Visa Code, the member state that is the sole or main destination of your visit is responsible for examining the application, and if no main destination can be determined, responsibility falls to the state of first entry into the Schengen area. Then a second, purely practical question decides what you actually do in Dhaka: not every Schengen state can be applied to in Bangladesh. Some have a resident embassy, some are represented by another state, some route through a mission outside the country.
Most guides explain the first rule and stop there, as though every Schengen country had a counter in Gulshan. The gap between “the country responsible for your application” and “the countries you can hand an application to in Dhaka” is where Bangladeshi applicants lose weeks.
The rule that decides which country owns your application
The EU Visa Code, Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, sets it out as published on EUR-Lex: the member state that is the sole or main destination of the visit is responsible for examining the visa application. If the main destination cannot be determined, responsibility passes to the member state of first entry into the Schengen area.
In practice that gives you two tests, in order:
- Main destination. Where will you spend the most nights, or where does the actual purpose of the trip happen? Five nights in Italy, three in France and two in Spain means Italy owns the application, no matter which airport you land at.
- First entry, as the tiebreaker only. If the trip is genuinely evenly split, the state you first enter the Schengen area through becomes responsible. Four nights in Germany and four in Austria, landing at Frankfurt, means Germany.
Two things follow, and they matter more than the rule itself.
First entry is not the general rule. A great deal of casual advice tells Bangladeshi travelers to apply to whichever country they fly into. That is only correct when no main destination can be established. Apply to your point of entry when you have a clear main destination elsewhere, and you have applied to a state that is not competent to examine your file.
Embassy shopping is not a strategy. The temptation, when appointment dates are scarce, is to look for whichever mission has an opening and build an itinerary backwards from it. Do not. An itinerary written to fit an available appointment rather than the trip you intend to take is a misrepresentation of your purpose of travel, and purpose-of-travel problems are among the documented grounds on which Schengen applications are refused. This is the section the SERP does not have. Everything below comes from the missions’ own published pages, checked August 2026. Representation arrangements change, so treat this as a starting map and confirm on the mission’s site.

Two clarifications that regularly trip people up.
The Faroe Islands and Greenland are not in the Schengen area. A Danish Schengen visa does not cover them and they are issued separately, which is exactly why the Danish embassy lists them apart.
A representing embassy is not a general-purpose Schengen counter. The German Embassy in Dhaka accepting Estonia applications does not make it able to accept Spain applications. Representation is a specific bilateral arrangement, state by state.
When your main destination has no Dhaka route
Several Schengen states, including popular destinations, have no visa-issuing mission in Bangladesh and no representation arrangement in Dhaka. If your main destination is one of them, you have three honest options and none of them is “apply somewhere easier”.
- Find out which mission is accredited to Bangladesh for that state. It is frequently the state’s embassy in New Delhi. The published guidance in this situation is to consult that state’s embassy in Delhi to establish which mission you should approach.
- Ask that state whether it has appointed a representative in Dhaka since you last checked. These arrangements are added and withdrawn, and mission pages update before third-party guides do.
- Genuinely change the trip. If your itinerary is flexible and the country you can actually apply to would become the true main destination, restructure the trip so the paperwork matches reality. That is legitimate. Writing an itinerary you do not intend to follow is not.
Do this before you book flights. Non-refundable tickets are the most common self-inflicted loss in this entire process. What a Schengen application asks for, whichever state you apply to
The Visa Code sets a common core, and each member state publishes its own checklist on top. The elements common to the Dhaka missions’ published lists:
- The completed application form, submitted through the state’s own system (Germany, for example, uses the Videx online form)
- A passport meeting the validity and blank-page requirements the mission publishes
- Photographs to specification
- Travel medical insurance valid for the Schengen area
- Proof of accommodation for the whole stay
- Evidence of means of subsistence for the trip
- Evidence of your ties and situation in Bangladesh: employment or business documentation, and the bank documentation the mission asks for
- Biometrics in person. The Dutch page states you must appear in person to submit an application, even if you are under 18

The lodging window, and the appointment problem
Two published rules worth planning around, both stated by the German Embassy in Dhaka in line with the Visa Code: applications can be submitted up to six months before the intended trip, and must be lodged at least 15 days before intended travel.
Read those as the outer edges of a window, not as a timeline for a decision. Nobody can tell you how long your application will take, and any page that promises you a date is guessing. What you can control is applying early inside the six-month window, because the binding constraint in Dhaka is usually appointment availability rather than the assessment itself.
On that point, two missions say the same thing in almost the same words, and it is worth repeating. The German Embassy in Dhaka states that its office does not work with brokers or agencies and that such individuals and organizations are not able to secure appointments with it. The Dutch page tells applicants to avoid unnecessary costs, book the appointment themselves, and not to make an appointment through an intermediary. If someone in Dhaka offers to sell you an appointment slot, both of the governments involved have already told you what that is worth.
What not to do
Do not apply to a state that is not your main destination in the hope of a faster date. It is the wrong file in the wrong place.
Do not let anyone prepare documents you have not read. You sign the application. Anything fabricated in it, a bank statement that is not yours, an employment letter for a job you do not hold, an invitation from a person you do not know, is your problem and it follows your fingerprints across the whole Schengen system.
Do not buy non-refundable flights before you have a decision. Missions ask for an itinerary or a reservation, which is not the same as a purchased ticket. Ask the mission what form of booking it accepts.
Do not assume a refusal is permanent. It is a decision on one file. Understanding the published ground you were refused under matters far more than reapplying quickly.
