Bangladesh Passport Renewal From Abroad: Mission Process

No, you do not have to fly back. Bangladesh passport renewal from abroad is done through the Bangladesh embassy, high commission or consulate that covers the country where you live. You apply online at the e-passport portal, book an appointment, attend the mission in person for fingerprints, iris scan and photo, and pay the fee in the mission's own way. The jurisdiction matters: London and Dubai, for example, set different fees, payment methods, child rules and timing rules, so the mission covering your address is the one whose page counts.

This is general information, not legal advice. Every detail below is quoted from official mission pages read on 27 September 2026. Fees and requirements change, so confirm them with your own mission before you apply.

The Process in Six Steps

The Bangladesh High Commission in London sets out its e-passport application process in stages, and other missions follow a similar pattern:

  1. Online application. "Applicants must lodge their application online" at the e-passport portal, epassport.gov.bd.
  2. Appointment booking, through the same portal.
  3. Biometric enrolment in person: fingerprints, iris scan and signature, with documents scanned and an enrolment slip issued.
  4. Payment at the counter.
  5. Processing in Dhaka. London says applicants can track status at the portal's application-status page.
  6. Collection after notification, during the mission's collection hours.

The Consulate General of Bangladesh in Dubai states the core point plainly on its e-passport page: "Physical appearance (except under 5 years old) is mandatory for issue and reissue of an e-passport." A renewal cannot be done entirely by post or online at either mission.

Bangladesh Passport Renewal From Abroad: The Documents

The two mission pages we read ask for a similar core set for someone who already holds a passport.

Document London (as listed 27 Sep 2026) Dubai (as listed 27 Sep 2026)
Printed online application with barcode Yes Yes
NID or 17-digit online birth registration certificate Original NID or 17-digit BRC, English version, online verifiable NID or 17-digit online birth certificate
Current passport (MRP or e-passport) Original, or photocopy plus police lost report Current MRP or e-passport
Proof of residence in the host country Proof of UK or Ireland address Emirates ID or resident permit, plus UAE visa copy
Marriage or divorce certificate If marital status has changed Not listed on the page we read
Foreign passport, if held British or Irish passport if applicable Not listed on the page we read

The NID or birth registration certificate is the document that most often causes delays. It has to match the data in your old passport. If your old MRP carries a spelling or date that differs from your NID, the mission cannot simply carry the old data across. Our guide to name and date of birth mismatches on a Bangladeshi passport explains where those differences come from.

When You Can Apply: A Rule That Differs by Mission

This is the part many renewal guides miss. Some missions limit how early you may renew.

The Dubai consulate's page, read on 27 September 2026, says eligible applicants include those "currently holding an MRP with less than 1 Year validity," and adds: "E-Passport applications will not be accepted if the existing MRP has more than one year of validity remaining."

The London page we read did not state an equivalent window. That does not mean London has no rule; it means we did not see one there. The practical point is that the answer to "can I renew now?" depends on the mission, so the mission's own page, or its helpline, is the place to ask.

Timing also interacts with travel. Many countries and airlines look at how much validity your passport has left. Our explainer on the six-month passport validity rule covers who actually checks it. Renewing close to expiry and needing to travel during processing is the situation to plan around.

Fees: Quoted From the Mission, Not Estimated

Fees are set per mission and paid in local currency. What we can quote is what each page showed on the day we read it.

Bangladesh High Commission, London (27 September 2026):

  • 48 pages, 5 years: £96 regular, £145 express
  • 48 pages, 10 years: £118 regular, £170 express
  • 64 pages, 5 years: £145 regular, £195 express
  • 64 pages, 10 years: £167 regular, £220 express
  • A discounted student rate for full-time students, with some student categories excluded

London also explains a detail that confuses many applicants: "After successful application submission the applicant will see E-passport fee in the application in Dollar currency. However, the actual fee that needs to be paid in the counter will be in British pound Currency." It says payment is by credit or debit card at the counter, that it "does not accept any cash payment," and: "Please do not pay in A-Challan or e-Challan. A-Challan or e-Challan is only accepted exclusively for passport office who applies in Bangladesh."

Consulate General, Dubai: the fee schedule is published on its page as images, and we are not transcribing figures we could not read as text. Its own page is the reliable source.

For how fees and delivery types work for applications made inside Bangladesh, see our guide to e-passport renewal in Bangladesh.

How Long It Takes

Processing abroad is not instant, and both missions tie their timelines to conditions.

  • London: regular delivery is listed at 4 to 6 weeks. For express, it says: "Express delivery will only be possible if the applicant has a previous MRP or an E-Passport (date of issue is within last 10 years) and there is no data mismatch between Application, previous MRP/E-Passport and Birth Registration Certificate/NID."
  • Dubai: "If no police verification is required and there is no mismatch of data between the MRP/EPP and the NID/BRC, the new passport is expected to be delivered within 4 to 6 weeks from the date of enrolment." Its urgent option is "expected to be delivered within 15 days" under the same conditions.

Dubai also explains why some applications take longer: where police verification is needed, timing "may vary" because of checks by the Department of Immigration and Passports in Dhaka and the Special Branch of Bangladesh Police.

These are the missions' stated expectations, not promises. A data mismatch or a verification requirement can extend any timeline.

MRP Holders: Renewal Means a New E-Passport

If your current passport is a machine readable passport (MRP), renewal abroad means applying for an e-passport, not extending the MRP. Both mission pages frame the application this way, with the current MRP listed as a required document. The differences between the two formats, and what changes when you switch, are covered in our piece on MRP versus e-passport.

Children Renewing Abroad

Children's renewals follow the same route, with a few differences that vary by mission:

  • London: children under 6 are exempt from biometrics but must still visit the High Commission with a 3R photo (89 x 127 mm), and "Parents must collect the passport of a child."
  • Dubai: physical appearance is mandatory for everyone except those "under 5 years old."

The age cut-offs differ by one year between the two missions, which is a clear example of why one country's rule cannot be assumed for another.

Common Reasons a Renewal Stalls

  • NID or birth registration that does not match the old passport. Both missions make a data match a condition of their faster timelines.
  • Applying to the wrong office. London asks for proof of UK or Ireland address; Dubai asks for Emirates ID and a UAE visa copy. The mission wants evidence you live in its area.
  • Paying the wrong way. London states it does not take A-Challan or e-Challan and does not accept cash.
  • Applying too early at a mission with a validity window, as Dubai's page shows.
  • Old passport lost. London accepts a photocopy with a police lost report; plan for that paperwork before the appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I renew my Bangladeshi passport without going back to Bangladesh?

Yes. Bangladesh missions abroad accept e-passport applications from Bangladeshis living in their area. You apply online, then attend the mission in person for biometrics, as the London and Dubai mission pages describe.

Can I renew my Bangladeshi passport online only?

No. Both missions we checked require in-person attendance for biometrics. Dubai states that "Physical appearance (except under 5 years old) is mandatory for issue and reissue of an e-passport."

How much does Bangladesh passport renewal cost abroad?

It depends on the mission. The London High Commission listed fees from £96 for a 48-page, 5-year regular passport up to £220 for a 64-page, 10-year express passport when we read it on 27 September 2026, payable by card at the counter. Other missions set their own local-currency fees.

How long does renewal take from abroad?

London lists 4 to 6 weeks for regular delivery. Dubai says 4 to 6 weeks from enrolment for regular and 15 days for urgent, when no police verification is needed and there is no data mismatch. Neither is a guarantee.

How early can I renew my passport abroad?

That varies by mission. The Dubai consulate says it will not accept an e-passport application if the existing MRP has more than one year of validity remaining. Check your own mission's page for its rule.
