The Dhaka airport departure process runs in five fixed steps, always in the same order: the driveway entry gate, airline check-in on the departure floor, departure immigration, pre-boarding security screening, then the holding lounge and your boarding gate. Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport’s own passenger guide tells departing passengers to reach the departure driveway at least four hours before the scheduled flight time. Nothing in the sequence changes for a Bangladeshi passport holder flying to any destination.
That is the whole shape of it. The rest of this page is what happens inside each step, what you have to hand over, which passengers have an extra desk to visit, and which parts of the published guidance we could confirm and which we could not.
The sequence, and who publishes each rule

Two of those five steps belong to your airline rather than to the airport, and that matters more than it sounds. The airport can be quiet and you can still miss your flight, because the counter that closed was your airline’s counter and it closed on your airline’s clock.
Step 1: the driveway gate, and the four-hour instruction
The first checkpoint is outside the building. Airport security checks a passport and a ticket at the departure driveway before anyone walks into the terminal, and the airport publishes free trolley service for baggage at that point.
The airport’s departure guideline, read on 8 September 2026, tells passengers to “arrive at the departure driveway of the airport at least 4 hours before the scheduled time of their flight.” Almost every travel page that ranks for this query says three hours instead. We are not going to reconcile those two numbers for you, because we cannot: one is the operator’s published instruction and the other is what writers have repeated for years. What we can say is that the four-hour figure is the one printed by the body that runs the airport, and that the cost of the extra hour is boredom while the cost of being short is the flight.
One more thing at this gate, and it surprises families. The airport’s own FAQ, read the same day, states that only passengers may enter the airport and that visitor passes are closed. If relatives are coming to see you off, they are saying goodbye at the driveway. Confirm the current position with the airport before you plan a send-off, because that FAQ answer still carries a Covid-era explanation and pages like that go stale quietly.
Step 2: check-in, and the desks some passengers must visit first
Check-in for international departures is on the departure floor. You find your airline’s counter row from the flight information display, hand over your passport and travel documents, and receive a boarding card and a baggage tag for each checked bag.
Two details decide whether this step is calm. The first is your airline’s check-in closing time, which is published by the airline and is not the same across carriers, so it is worth reading on your own ticket rather than assuming. The second is your documents. Immigration is two steps away and it works from the same passport, so a passport that does not match your other papers is a problem you want to have already solved. The same is true of validity: if the book is close to expiry, start with e-passport renewal timing rather than with the airport.
Some passengers have an additional desk before or after check-in. The airport’s guide names the Prabashi Kalyan Desk in the departure area for Bangladesh-to-Saudi Arabia travelers: passengers traveling on leave have a leave certificate verified before check-in, and first-time passengers have a BMET card verified and sealed at the desk inside the immigration area after check-in. If that describes your trip, budget for it as a real stop rather than a formality.
Step 3: departure immigration
Departure immigration sits near the check-in rows and is signposted as Immigration-1, 2 and 3. You present your passport and your boarding card, and the thing to check before you walk away is that the passport has actually been stamped or otherwise cleared, because the airport’s own guidance tells passengers to make sure the seal is there.
If you hold a Bangladeshi e-passport, you may be routed to an automated gate rather than a staffed counter. The short version for planning purposes: assume a counter, and treat the automated gate as a bonus if you get it.
What immigration asks you at this counter varies by officer and by case, and this page is deliberately not going to script it. Carry the documents that support the reason you say you are traveling and you have done the part that is in your control.
Step 4: security screening
Pre-boarding security is the tray step. The airport lists the items that must come out and go through the scanner separately: coats, blazers and jackets, belts, shoes, wristwatches, mobile phones, laptops, tablets, chargers, power banks, keys, coins and other electronic goods. It also lists toy guns among items that are handled restrictively, which catches people carrying gifts for children.
The airport FAQ adds a few specifics worth reading before you pack rather than at the belt: liquid food is not permitted, drones are prohibited, loose batteries with wires attached are refused, and a cricket bat travels in hold baggage rather than in the cabin. Commercial quantities of anything need customs permission, which is a different conversation from a personal-baggage one.

Step 5: the holding lounge and the gate
After screening you wait in the departure lounge, where the airport lists currency exchange, baby care facilities, restaurants and duty-free shopping. The airport’s instruction is to reach the designated boarding gate one to two hours before departure time, following the display boards, and then to wait in the holding lounge until boarding is called.
Gate numbers at Hazrat Shahjalal are assigned on the day and shown on the flight information displays, so the gate printed on a boarding card is a starting point rather than a promise. Look up at least once after you sit down.
What this page does not contain, and why
There is a version of this article on the internet that tells you the immigration queue takes forty minutes on a Thursday night and twelve minutes at dawn. We are not writing that version, for one reason: nobody at this site stood in that queue, and a number invented to sound experienced is worse than no number at all.
So there are no queue times here. There are no walking distances, no “the counters on the left move faster” tips, and no description of the signage, because signage changes and the description would be quietly wrong within a year. There is also no currency figure on this page even though the airport’s FAQ carries one, because the amount a traveler may legally carry is set by Bangladesh Bank and the airport’s restatement of it is older than Bangladesh Bank’s current circular. The five-step sequence has been stable for years and is the part of this page you can rely on. Four things around it move: the airline counter closing times, the prohibited items list, visitor access to the terminal, and which terminal a given airline operates from as the airport’s third terminal moves toward opening. Each of those is published by somebody, and each is worth thirty seconds of checking in the week you fly.
