To apply for a Bangladesh e-passport from inside the country you do four things in order: fill in the online form at epassport.gov.bd, pay the fee, attend your divisional or regional passport office in person on your appointment date for fingerprints, an iris scan and a signature, then wait through police verification of your addresses. The Department of Immigration and Passports (DIP) publishes fees at regional passport offices ranging from Tk 4,025 to Tk 13,800, set by booklet size, validity period and delivery speed.
Everything below was read from DIP’s own pages and from Bangladesh Police Special Branch on 24 August 2026. Fees and rules here move by circular, not on a calendar, so the portal you are looking at when you pay is the authority, not this page.
What you actually do, in order
DIP’s own “what to do to get a passport” page, last updated 23 August 2026, is short, and this is the sequence worth memorizing.
- Complete the e-passport application form online at epassport.gov.bd. DIP states plainly that no document needs to be attested for an e-passport application, and that no photograph needs to be attached. Both instructions exist because people were paying for attestation they did not need.
- Pay the fee. DIP’s fee page says the fee can be paid online at the time of application, and lists six banks that accept it: One Bank, Premier Bank, Sonali Bank, Trust Bank, Bank Asia and Dhaka Bank.
- Attend your appointment in person. Bangladesh Police Special Branch’s passport FAQ describes the applicant receiving a schedule, paying at a bank, then attending the designated passport office for biometric enrollment. Nobody can do this part for you.
- Police verification of your addresses, which starts by itself. See below.
- Collection, at the office where you enrolled.
A passport is the first item on any outbound trip, which is why it sits ahead of everything else on our first international trip from Bangladesh checklist, and ahead of any question about which countries a Bangladeshi passport opens without a visa arranged in advance.
The fee, exactly as the Department publishes it
This table is DIP’s, under the heading “passport fees at regional passport offices”. It is the in-Bangladesh schedule, and it does not apply to applications filed at a Bangladesh mission abroad.

Two honest caveats, and they matter more than the numbers.
The page carries a last-updated stamp of 19 January 2020. Those figures are what the Department publishes today, read on 24 August 2026, but that stamp is old while DIP’s process page was refreshed this month. Whatever the portal calculates for your own application is the number to pay.
The fee page does not say whether VAT is included. We will not tell you that it is or is not, because DIP does not say. If your payment slip differs from the table, the slip is the document that counts.
Which ID you need, and it depends on your age
DIP sets this out by age band, and it is the question that sends most applicants home from the counter.
- Under 18: an online birth registration certificate, English version.
- 18 to 20: either a National ID card or the online English-version birth registration certificate.
- Over 20: the National ID card is required.
For a child with no NID, the parent’s or guardian’s NID number must be given. For children under six, DIP asks for a 3R size lab-print photograph with a gray background. For a re-issue you bring the original passport; if it was lost, DIP asks for the general diary or FIR copy plus a photocopy of the lost passport. Government orders (GO), no-objection certificates (NOC) and technical certificates are uploaded where they apply. DIP notes one exception: applicants at Bangladesh missions abroad may submit the birth registration certificate instead of an NID.
The list your own passport office publishes is longer
Here is the part almost nobody writing about this mentions. The national instructions above are not the full list your counter works from, because individual regional passport offices publish their own.
The Regional Passport Office, Sirajganj, on a page last updated 26 December 2023, lists for an adult new applicant: the printed online application, the original NID, the parents’ NIDs or their online death certificates, a nationality and citizenship certificate, a spouse’s NID and marriage certificate where applicable, proof of occupation such as an education certificate, trade license or employer’s letter, an electricity bill, and the land khotian. It closes with “additional documents as circumstances require”.
Whether your office asks for all of that we cannot tell you, and neither can any blog. Open your own regional office’s page before you travel to it. That one check is worth more than any generic checklist, this one included.
Two official timelines, and they do not match
The delivery categories on the fee table read “Regular, within 21 days”, “Express, within 10 days” and “Super Express, within 2 days”.
DIP’s process page publishes a different set, and it is conditional: where police clearance has been submitted and all other information is correct, it gives 2 working days for urgent, 7 working days for expedited and 15 working days for regular.
The two are less a contradiction than two different situations, and the shorter clock is the one that starts once the police side is settled. Neither page promises you a date. Treat any delivery figure as the target the Department publishes, not a guarantee it has made to you. If you are also chasing a visa appointment, for example the slot queue at IVAC in Dhaka, start the passport first and the visa second.
Police verification, described by the police
Bangladesh Police Special Branch publishes its own FAQ on passport verification, and it answers the two things people worry about.
It starts by itself. Special Branch states that verification for both the permanent and the present address is sent automatically and online from the passport office. You do not initiate it and you do not carry a file anywhere.
What the officer typically asks to see: the NID, or the birth registration for a child, the parents’ NIDs, a photocopy of a utility bill such as water or electricity, and an employer’s certification for applicants working in financial institutions, plus other documents as requested. Special Branch refers to a designated 15 days for completing the investigation and acknowledges that technical issues can delay it.
If you are outside Bangladesh, this is not your process
This article covers applications made inside Bangladesh, at a divisional or regional passport office. Applicants abroad go through the Bangladesh mission that covers where they live, and the differences are real rather than cosmetic.
The High Commission for Bangladesh in Ottawa, for example, publishes its own e-passport page. The online application is still made at epassport.gov.bd, but enrollment happens at the mission, the mission forwards the file to DIP in Dhaka, the accepted identity documents differ, payment is by bank draft or pay order, and the fee schedule and processing times are the mission’s own and published in local currency.
Find your mission’s page on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs site and read that. Do not carry a figure from this article to a counter outside Bangladesh.
Make sure you are on the real portal
Search this topic and you will meet a .org domain styled like a government site and, on the day we searched, a clone of the application system hosted on a free app-hosting subdomain. Neither is DIP.
The official portal is epassport.gov.bd. The Department is dip.gov.bd. DIP’s online-application page publishes the passport hotline 16445 alongside the national information line 333. If someone offers to move you up a queue, that is not a service the Department publishes, and this site will not tell you how to take it up.

How much does it cost to apply for an e-passport in Bangladesh?
DIP publishes fees at regional passport offices from Tk 4,025 for a 48-page, 5-year booklet on regular delivery up to Tk 13,800 for a 64-page, 10-year booklet on super express. The page does not state whether VAT is included and carries a last-updated stamp of 19 January 2020, so pay what the portal calculates for your own application.
Can I apply for an e-passport without a National ID card?
It depends on your age. DIP requires the NID for applicants over 20. Applicants aged 18 to 20 may use the NID or the online English-version birth registration certificate, and applicants under 18 use the birth certificate. Applicants at Bangladesh missions abroad may use the birth certificate instead of an NID.
How long does a Bangladesh e-passport take?
DIP publishes two figures. Its fee page lists regular within 21 days, express within 10 days and super express within 2 days. Its process page lists 15, 7 and 2 working days where police clearance has been submitted and everything else is correct. Neither is a guarantee, so do not book non-refundable travel against them.
Do I have to go to the passport office in person?
